"Great-looking hair starts in the shower," says Van Council, owner of the Van Michael and New Talent salons in Atlanta. Shampoo with a volumizing product, then apply light conditioner to your ends only.

When your hair is 60 percent dry, apply five to 10 spritzes of body-boosting spray to your roots.

Then blow-dry, lifting sections of your hair with your fingers or a vent brush and aiming heat at your roots.

Midday quick fix

Lift your hair at the roots and spritz with light, flexible-hold hair spray.

Wear a low ponytail.

Use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of styling-product buildup.

Style your hair as usual, but avoid using shine-enhancing products, cautions Richard Calcasola, owner of the Maximus Salon and Spa in Westbury, NY. They can make greasy hair look stringy.

Midday quick fix

Blot your scalp with one of those oil-absorbing sheets intended for your face like MAC Blot Film.

Or, fake a sleek style. To do: Work gel from roots to ends, then slick hair back or pull it into a low ponytail.

"After shampooing, use a color-enhancing conditioner created for your hair's hue," says Van Council, owner of the Van Michael and New Talent salons in Atlanta.

When you get out of the shower, detangle your locks with a wide-tooth comb. Then, apply a drop of shine-enhancing serum or silicone cream to damp hair.

IF YOUR HAIR IS STRAIGHT
Blow-dry while brushing with a boar-bristle brush.

IF IT'S CURLY
Blow-dry with a diffuser attachment.

Midday quick fix

Flat-iron straight hair or simply mist with a shine-enhancing spray.

Smooth Frizz

Use Aveda Custom Control Finishing Emulsion

"Try moisturizing shampoo and conditioner -- avoid those containing protein, which can be drying," says Van Council, owner of the Van Michael and New Talent salons in Atlanta.

IF YOUR HAIR IS CURLY
Work antifrizz gel through hair and blow-dry using a diffuser attachment.

IF IT'S STRAIGHT
Apply straightening cream, then divide hair into sections. Using a big round brush to hold tresses taut, blow-dry each section, aiming air down your hair shaft.

Midday quick fix

Rub finishing emulsion between your palms and smooth them over frizz.
