Question:I keep reading that pants are the big trend for fall, but what if I still want to wear skirts? There must be some cool new tights out there, no?

Answered by: Karla M. Martinez, T Magazine’s women’s fashion market editor.

Come April, the thing I most look forward to is taking off the black tights. I was so reluctant to get back into the habit of putting them on in the morning that in Paris I went around bare-legged most days despite the cold, rainy weather. But now there is no way of getting around it. My knee-jerk response is to run to Wolford, but in light of my diminishing spending power, $50 seems a bit much to spend on a pair of stockings. What’s more, a cool pair of stockings in an interesting color or pattern is an easy and, in theory, inexpensive way to punch up your fall wardrobe.

Some ideas: At Bottega Veneta, Tomas Maier matched the tights to the dresses — a gray shift was worn with charcoal tights, blue with blue and so on. I found an assortment of great colors on the No-nonsense Web site for $4.50 (they can also be found at most pharmacies). I was worried they might be shiny or feel cheap, but I am happy to report that this is not the case. The brown ones looked great with a pair of brown suede boots and a white dress with a colorful floral brown print. At Dolce & Gabbana, chunky tweed looks were paired with thick, ribbed gray tights. J. Crew has a similar style for $26. Definitely warm. Lastly, at the Chanel show, lace tights were everywhere. DKNY has a version in wool blend in a pattern called Cotele Moderne that you can dress up with a black cocktail dress or dress down with denim mini for the weekends. I’m stocking up.
