There's no denying the enduring appeal of a classic, black ensemble. The timeless colour-way needs no introduction, featuring in each of our wardrobes in multiple capacities. While I will never be able to truly part from the wardrobe staple, recently my eyes have been wandering towards a more unexpected variation and I have a strong feeling it's about to take over as the year's dominate colour trend. It's about time we become well acquainted with the colour brown, or as I prefer, cocoa. Thankfully, mastering how to wear this up-and-coming hue has never been simpler.

The rich cocoa hue taking over our sartorial roster has been doing the rounds for quite some time. After too many years of ignoring the potential of a well-curated chocolate brown outfit, trailblazing fashion house Bottega Veneta reminded us of the colour-ways true staying power and before long, the warm-hued staple was making its presence known all over our Instagram feeds. Although 2020 didn't afford us much opportunity to give brown a test run, the shade managed to stick around in the form of comfy loungewear and activewear – this year, proving it means business taking form in covetable accessories, outerwear and wardrobe basics.

Below, three foolproof suggestions for how you can wear the chic nutty brown hue for the year to come.

Start small

Like with any new colour inclusion into your wardrobe, it's always best to start small. In this case, accessories – any variant from footwear, to handbags and cashmere bras – are your best way forward. By incorporating simple touches along the way, you'll slowly become more comfortable with the colour brown and how you prefer to wear it.

Monochrome is best

If you're uncertain on how to wear or style brown as part of your broader outfit, the safest approach is to stick with monochrome. The tonal hues will naturally compliment each other and you can easily add depth and elevate your ensemble by experimenting with contrasting textures or details.

Build your collection from the ground up

The beauty of chocolate brown is that it pairs perfectly with other neutrals, as well as forming a base colour to compliment more vibrant shades, such as electric blue and lime green. Once you start treating it as a staple colour rather than a statement hue, styling the shade becomes much simpler. This is why personally, I'm investing in well tailored trousers, ever-lasting tanks and trend-defying outerwear as my starting point.
