While her otherworldly Versace creation for 2018’s “Heavenly Bodies” theme, complete with giant angel wings, was by far her most fireworks-worthy moment to date, Perry has made other notable appearances. In 2017, for the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons” exhibition, she leaned into the avant-garde aesthetic of the night with a custom gown by Maison Margiela and a full embroidered veil designed by John Galliano. A year earlier, for “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” she accessorized her custom Prada dress with a cheeky tech accessory: a ’90s-style Tamagotchi.
Even when she’s not dressing precisely to theme, the looks are still campy, capital C. Remember the spray-painted Moschino dress she for “China: Through the Looking Glass,” in 2015? With a bevy of kooky fashion moments under her belt—both on the Met steps and on stage—Perry is bound to once again pull out all the stops for this year’s Met gala (which has a white-tie, Gilded Glamour dress code). She clearly has the fashion history to prove it.
