A wig wholesaler in the neighbourhood says the look has become one of its best-sellers. "Georgie Wigs Vice President Shlomo Klein said Thursday that the company has sold about 50 Palin wigs since the Alaska governor joined John McCain on the GOP ticket," reports the Times Herald-Record.

“It’s a very conservative yet fashion-forward look,” Klein said. “It can be worn down, it can be worn up. There are a lot of styling options. The bun higher, the bun lower.”

Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs to cover their hair after marriage. Other celebrity styles in Georgie's stable include the Hillary Clinton and the Jennifer Aniston. The all-human-hair Palin costs $695.

Meanwhile, in today's Times Gerard Baker targets the "slime-job" by a "hyper-partisan and national and global media" by focussing on her $150,000 wardrobe and style upgrades. In this case, Baker is wrong. While it's silly to criticise a public figure for polishing up her look (every politician does it and women are judged on their looks), the whole point is the scale of the spending.

"Let's say she bought 10 new pairs of designer shoes," Sunshine Flint, the editor of The Luxury Channel, said to me yesterday. "At $400 a pair, you're only looking at $4,000." Double it and you're still only up to $8,000. "What could she be spending it on?" Flint mused.

It's evidence of how misplaced the Republican campaign efforts have become.

Even the most fashion-focussed women I know are scratching their heads over how and why anyone would spend so much on what are essentially board-room outfits. Spending "only" $25,000 would cover a different outfit every day, with allowances for a variety of jewellery, scarves, and tops with her various skirts and jackets. As we come into tougher economic times, we'll all be mixing and matching rather than shopping and spending. (Palin hit back about the focus on fashion in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.)

Her hair might be winning fans in Brooklyn, but her shopping strategies aren't likely to catch on.
