"We found that over 100 people who used this tint needed hospitalisation last year," said Dr Pipat Yingseri, the FDA's chief.

The latest fashion trend among teenaged girls is to spread coloured gel on their lips and cheeks to make them look brighter pink and orange. The tints are mostly found in local markets and department stores at a cheap price.

"It makes them feel that they have healthy lips and cheeks," he said.

Tint is applied differently than regular lipstick, which is usually put on only the lips. The tint will be smeared inside the upper and lower lips, making it easy for the user to swallow the tainted substance in Tint and absorb it into the body.
